What is the difference between Class 4 and Class 7 MOTs?

The key difference between these classes of MOT test is the types of vehicles that are tested within the class. Class 4 is the most common type of MOT test and is suitable for cars and smaller vans and pickup trucks. Class 7 is for heavier (up to 3.5t) vehicles such as larger vans, motorhomes and some commercial vehicles.

The basic test is the same in that we check similar parts of the vehicle such as the brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, emissions, and the general vehicle structure. In the Class 7 test, the tyres and braking systems have additional checks to ensure that they can cope with the greater weight of these vehicles.

How long does an MOT test usually take?

The MOT test at The Peugeot Specialist generally takes between 45 minutes and an hour. You’re welcome to wait while we carry out the test or come back to collect your vehicle later if you prefer – we’ll give you a call when we’re done.

Of course, if your vehicle fails its MOT and additional work is required to ensure that it passes the retest, then it will be here longer depending on what’s needed. If your MOT hasn’t actually run out when you have the test, and the problems that caused your vehicle to fail are not labelled as dangerous, you should then be able to drive away and bring it back before your MOT certificate expires to have the repairs and retest.
